This article is really really useful for all plant lovers because today we will learn to identify and eliminate common pests in garden by styudying the bug’s leaf signatures to identify them and take the necessary steps to eradicate these common pests and insects from the garden.
Introduction
How would you feel if, one day during your early morning garden inspection, you discovered part of your garden had disappeared overnight, or found that your flower buds were torn apart and severely damaged? Your first instinct might be to spray a powerful chemical pesticide all over your plants to eliminate the culprits. However, this is not always the best approach. It’s crucial to spend some time identifying the pests causing the damage before taking action. Today, we’ll explore how to identify common pests by examining the leaf damage patterns they leave behind. Let’s get started.
Chewed Leaves or Slime Trails
Irregular-Shaped Holes in Leaves and Slime Trails
If you notice irregular-shaped holes in the leaves (not along the edges) and see slime trails or lines, the likely culprits are slugs and snails. Solution: One effective remedy is the Beer Trap. Pour some beer into a saucer and leave it overnight; this will attract and kill these creatures.
Chewed Leaves Along the Edges
If the leaves are chewed along the edges, leaf-cutting bees are usually the cause. Solution: Unless the damage is extensive, there’s no need to eliminate these bees, as they are beneficial insects essential for pollination.
Chewed Leaves with Central Holes
Skeletonised Leaves
If you find leaves with central holes between veins, resembling skeletonised leaves, caterpillars are often responsible. Other insects like beetles, earwigs, and sawflies can also create this pattern. Solution: For caterpillars, hand-pick and remove them along with their eggs from the leaves. Follow up with a neem oil and soap solution—10 ml neem oil + 10 drops of liquid soap or shampoo. Spray thoroughly, including the undersides of the leaves, twice a week.
Discolored Leaves and Sucking Damage
Thrips and Spider Mites
Discolored leaves that are folded into a pouch often indicate thrips or spider mites. The Cuban Laurel Thrips are a common type. If left untreated, these pests can cause considerable damage. Solution: Use a neem oil and soap spray twice a week. For severe infestations, consider adding clove oil or eucalyptus oil. As a last resort, you might use chemical sprays containing Imidacloprid. For an organic alternative, diatomaceous earth (DE) can be effective.
Zig-Zag Leaf Mining Pattern
Leaf Miners
A zig-zag pattern on leaves is characteristic of leaf miners, tiny larvae from insects like flies, moths, and beetles. While leaf miners don’t cause major damage, they can make the plant look unattractive. Solution: Neem oil is the best remedy for controlling leaf miners. You can watch my detailed video on leaf miners and their remedies HERE.
Sucking Damage and Deformed Leaves
Aphids, Whiteflies, and Mealy Bugs
Common sucking pests include aphids, whiteflies, and mealy bugs. Mealybugs, in particular, are found sucking on new growth and tips. They often have a symbiotic relationship with ants, which protect them in exchange for honeydew sugars. Solution: Use a magic organic mix containing multiple ingredients along with neem oil for control. These pests require a weekly spray depending on the severity. Other solutions include alcohol-based sprays and neem oil. Check out my video on this topic HERE.
Leaf Galls or Leaf Bumps
Tumor-Like Boils
Leaf galls or bumps, which appear as tumor-like boils on the leaf surface, are caused by irritation or stimulation of plant cells due to feeding or egg-laying by insects like aphids, wasps, and mites.
